About Us
The Young Christian Students / Young Students Movement (YCS/YSM) may be described with the help of the following characteristics.
A Student Movement YCS/YSM is a dynamic presence in history, alive to the context of the students and responding to their particular needs. This student context is not limited to the four walls of the school and to what we call student life but includes both the mentality (Opinions, Attitudes, Values, Traditions and its Expression in Outward Behaviour). Hence the action field of the movement transcends the campus of the school.
An Awareness Movement It helps young to analyze their experiences and deepen their awareness of themselves,
- Who they are (Potentialities, Aspirations, Responsibilities)
- How they relate to others (in the Family, School, Neighbourhood etc)
- What inspires and conditions them (Values and Traditions)
- How they need to change and can change and grow
An Action Oriented Movement It leads from awareness to Action. The awareness of some experience that is submitted to a critical reflection must lead to a conscious and concrete action either internal or external with in the scope of the student. Even if this action is not very effective in changing the reality itself, the very attempt has a great formative value.
Religious Inspired Movement At the beginning the Movement is Europe was entirely for Catholic Students. In India too most of the Original Members were Catholics. But before long the Movement began to attract students of other Faiths desirous of achieving its objectives. Although even now Christ inspired values are held in great appreciation by both Christians and Others. We realize that individual members have to contribute from their respective religious heritage. For this reason we insist on their knowing and practicing their religion according to their conscience and to the best of their ability.
Cell Based Movement The YCS/YSM operates on the theory of small group the cell of 8 to 12 students. Working through such limited groups has many advantages.
- Gives sense of belongingness
- Gives a chance to be oneself
- Creates an atmosphere where one feels accepted and respected
- Gives an opportunity to discover ones talents and weakness
- Gives an opportunity to search together and deepen their insights
An International Movement present in 7 continental regions (Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, North America and the Pacific). The movement is coordinated at the Local, Diocesan, National, Regional and International levels with a membership of millions of secondary and university students in 85 National Movements around the World. |
